CITATION returned to Google Docs

One of the most significant changes that happened to the features of Google Apps (now known as G Suite) towards the end of 2016 was the return of ​"Citation" ​tool ​back into Google Docs.

The feature was removed from Google Docs in September 2016 and Educators around the world lamented about it in a number of articles and blogs.

Using it in tandem with the Explore function​, citations as footnotes​ can be inserted in research reports, ​whitepapers.


The format of the citation can also be chosen from MLA, APA, and Chicago styles.

To try it out:

Open a document in Google Docs.

Click the “Explore” icon from the bottom right

Type a search in the search bar to search your docs and the web.






To add a citation from the web, hover over the search result and​ click “Cite as footnote”.

The ​Citation function ​however ​only works when you are using the "Explore" function to find websites​ and NOT for image citations.
